From the prayers and devotions of the pilgrims to the celebration of Holy Mass in the grounds of Walsingham Abbey, the day offered a beautiful witness to the enduring faith and devotion of Roman Catholics gathered at England’s ancient Marian shrine

From the praying of the Rosary, fellowship, and the walking pilgrimage procession all the way from Ely to Walsingham, to the solemn celebration of Holy Mass within the grounds of Walsingham Abbey — the historic site of the medieval Augustinian Priory and the Holy House of Our Lady — the day offered a powerful visible expression of the Catholic faith handed down through generations.

For these pilgrims, this was more than simply a journey to a historic shrine. It was a journey of faith: walking in the footsteps of countless Catholics who have travelled to Walsingham before them, entrusting themselves, their families, and the Church to the maternal protection and intercession of Our Blessed Virgin Lady.

The pilgrimage also carried a particular historical significance. One of the pilgrims told us that, to his knowledge, this was the first time the Traditional Latin Mass had been celebrated within the grounds of Walsingham Abbey since the Dissolution of the Churches and Monasteries during the English Protestant Reformation.

For many of those gathered, the celebration therefore represented not only a return to Walsingham’s ancient Catholic heritage, but also a profound reminder of the continuity of the Catholic faith and the enduring devotion of the English people to Our Lady of Walsingham.

A splendid High Mass was celebrated in the open air on the grounds of Walsingham Abbey by Fr. Thomas Crean, a Dominican friar based in London. Under the open skies of England’s ancient Marian shrine, pilgrims gathered in prayer and thanksgiving as the sacred liturgy was offered in honour of Our Lady of Walsingham. The celebration provided a particularly fitting expression of the pilgrimage’s devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to the restoration of the Catholic faith at this historic holy site.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Latin Mass Society Walsingham Pilgrimage 2026 -- Homily by Fr. For the pilgrims gathered here, this includes a renewed appreciation for the Church’s ancient liturgical traditions and the restoration of the Traditional Latin Mass as an important part of England’s Catholic heritage.

The pilgrimage therefore looks both to the past and to the future: remembering the Catholic faith that once shaped the nation, while seeking its renewal for generations to come.

The pilgrims paying their homage to Our Lady of Walsingham in the site of the original Holy House inside the Abbey Ground

Tom Fitzpatrick, a LMS Representative in Walsingham and a long-time participant in the Latin Mass Society’s annual pilgrimage, also spoke to me about the growing number of people taking part in the pilgrimage, particularly the increasing presence of young Catholics.

He described how encouraging it has been to see a new generation discovering the richness of the Church’s traditional liturgy and taking an active part in the pilgrimage to England’s ancient Marian shrine.

Tom also emphasised the particular importance of venerating our Blessed Lady at Walsingham, especially at the site associated with the Holy House of Nazareth. For pilgrims, he explained, Walsingham is not simply a place of historical interest of medieval buildings, but a sacred place of prayer and devotion, where the Catholics can honour the Blessed Virgin Mary and seek her maternal intercession.

The pilgrims processing into the Abbey Ground in Walsingham

The growing number of pilgrims, particularly among younger generations, offers a visible sign of the continuing vitality of devotion to Our Lady of Walsingham and of the enduring attraction of the Church’s traditional faith and liturgy.

For those who have walked these ancient roads, prayed together, and participated in the sacred liturgy, Walsingham has once again become a place where the past and present meet in the worship of Almighty God. The devotion of Our Lady of Walsingham continues to draw pilgrims to this holy place, reminding the faithful of Mary’s enduring invitation: to turn always towards her Son, Jesus Christ.

The Latin Mass Society pilgrimage is therefore not simply a celebration of a particular liturgical tradition. It is a witness to the enduring Catholic faith — expressed through prayer, pilgrimage, sacred music, and the reverent celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

As the pilgrims leave Walsingham, they carry with them the fruits of this pilgrimage, their prayers, and their renewed hope — entrusting themselves, their families, and the Church to the maternal care of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Our Lady of Walsingham.
