Devon and Cornwall Police announced on Friday afternoon that a murder investigation had been launched. Later that evening, the force reported that a 26-year-old man had been arrested at an address in Newton Abbot on suspicion of murder. The suspect, described by police as a white British national, remained in police custody while enquiries continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Saturday morning, however, police confirmed that the man had been released and was \u201cno longer part of the investigation\u201d. They added that the murder inquiry was \u201cmoving at a significant pace\u201d as detectives continued their investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Responding on Friday evening, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullally, who was attending the General Synod in York, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cI am deeply shocked and saddened by Ann Widdecombe\u2019s death in such terrible circumstances. My prayers are with her family and friends at this traumatic time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Earlier on Friday, Devon and Cornwall Police announced that a murder investigation had been launched following the death of former MP Ann Widdecombe at her home on Dartmoor in Devon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement, the force said officers were called to the property by the ambulance service at approximately 11:40am on Thursday, 9th July, where Miss Widdecombe, aged 78, was found deceased. Police said she had sustained serious injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cDetectives from the Force Major Crime Investigation Team have launched a murder investigation and are conducting extensive enquiries into the circumstances surrounding Miss Widdecombe\u2019s death.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Detective Chief Inspector Ilona Rosson said the investigation remained in its early stages but was progressing rapidly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cOur murder enquiry is in its early stages but moving at a significant pace. We are deploying all of the necessary resources to establish exactly what has happened and to identify the person responsible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI would appeal to anyone who may have information about this incident, however insignificant it may seem, to come forward and speak with us\u2026”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe will release further information when we are able to do so. In the meantime I would ask people not to speculate about what might have happened, particularly on social media. In a statement released on Friday morning, before police announced a murder investigation, Miss Widdecombe\u2019s representatives, Cloud 9 Management, appealed for privacy for her family during this difficult time. The Archbishop of Canterbury also paid tribute to her, describing her as a woman of \u201cdeep Christian faith, which drove her strong principles in a career spent as a committed public servant.\u201d she added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ann Widdecombe was received into the Roman Catholic Church in 1993, following the General Synod\u2019s approval of the Priests (Ordination of Women) Measure in November 1992.
